COVID-19 Update: What We've Learned

As we see out the last days of summer, I wanted to take the opportunity to update everyone on what we know about COVID-19 and young children and what life at Kids Konnect looks like moving forwards.

Reality Check: Coronavirus and Preschool-Aged Children

Last week, the LA Times reported that despite being “mask licking germ bombs”, few preschoolers catch the coronavirus. The article goes on to discuss how prevalent other illnesses can be in preschools, with a healthy preschooler bringing home 12 - 18 upper respiratory infections, at least six to eight colds, two cases of croup, and very often flu—all in a typical year. However when it comes to COVID-19, only 450 students have tested positive across the 33,773 open preschools. Even when including staff and parents, the overwhelming majority of preschools in California have reported zero cases of COVID-19.

Why Do I Need a Safe Solution to Pandemic Pods?

As we enter the Fall season, there is a surge of families rising up to provide education for their children amidst a period of K12 school closures due to the pandemic. At Kids Konnect, we join Gov. Newsom in applauding parents’ resourcefulness, but we must draw on our experience to warn against taking rash action when we are in crisis mode.

The Case for Employer Subsidized Childcare

More than 60 percent of children under age 6 have two parents in the workforce. And yet, 2 million parents are disrupted at work every year by being let down by their childcare provider. The problem seems to be about both the financial and quality aspects of childcare. Not only do 62% of parents struggle to find quality childcare, the cost is on average $9, 589 per year—that’s 20% of the median household income.

How to Talk to Young Children about Race

While there is no easy way to dive into the topic of race with young children, we as adults, can still have age appropriate discussions around the complexities of race and racial inequality. It is important that we communicate and speak openly so that children are able to make meaningful connections and learn about patterns that lead to racial bias.
