3 Preschool Books About Kindness

How do you teach kindness to preschool children? Kids Konnect teaches kindness through children's literature about kindness. Books about kindness are also a good parenting technique because they often lead to meaningful conversations. Here are three excellent preschool books about kindness:

Preschool children need to know that their kindness can influence others. In Because Amelia Smiles by David Ezra Stein, a little girl's constant smile as she skips down the street starts a chain reaction of kindness which eventually makes its way around the world. A grandmother makes cookies for her grandson in Mexico, that grandson inspires his student, the student inspires a ballet troupe in England and so on until the kindness eventually makes its way back to Amelia in the form of a handknit scarf from her aunt. Because Amelia Smiles teaches that small acts of kindness by small children can have a big impact.

Good People Everywhere

Good People Everywhere by Linea Gillen is beautifully illustrated with calm pictures of people doing kind deeds for others through ordinary actions. Farmers grow seeds, grocers sell them, construction workers build a home, doctors deliver babies, parents feed children and a teenager helps a boy who gets hurt. What makes this book special is that it shows that acts of kindness can be built into the everyday. A good parenting technique is to help children see the kindness of others so that they are grateful for what others do for them and are encouraged to be kind in return.

Days with Frog and Toad

Cranky Toad and happy-go-lucky Frog make odd companions. What makes Days with Frog and Toad by Arnold Lobel such a wonderful read aloud is the delightful way that they each talk to one another with love, kindness and empathy. In spite of their differences, they always seek to see the other's point of view and that creates a friendship which survives the ups and downs of life. All of Lobel's books give good examples of how people can get along by being kinder and more forgiving to one another. Parents might find they take some lessons from these books too!

Good parenting involves giving children the opportunity to talk about their emotions. Reading children's books about kindness can also help you talk about bullying and how our actions affect the way people treat us. Do you have a favorite children's book about kindness?
