What's on in San Mateo this April

Welcome back Kids Konnect families! We are happy to be back at school! We will continue to focus on mindfulness throughout the month. In the mornings, the children will have an opportunity to practice yoga and calming activities with teachers- as we play quiet music. Since we have been away from school for a while, we will be going over the rules and expectations we follow while at school. Topics discussed will be: using our words to express what we feel or need; safe hands and bodies; using our walking feet indoors; how we wash our hands; and many other expectations.

Land- The first week back, we will be discussing land features. The older children will be learning what is a habitat and the different habitats all over the world. Along with the habitats, the children will be discussing the different animals that live in the varying habitats. Projects and activities during this week involve tornados in a bottle and art terrain crafts.

Water- Water is an essential part of earth. During this week's theme, children will be discovering the water cycle, exploring their senses of touch with water sensory activities. Activities during this week include puddle jumps, hand-eye coordination practice with pouring, sink or float experiments, and STEAM activities like building a raft.

Air- Air is also essential in our planet Earth. The children will be asked to observe and discuss properties of air in different activities. Experiments like hot air balloons and airplane making will test out how we can use air to fly various objects. Air pressure is another topic with activities like a sponge bag that uses air pressure to move a toy car; the pompom and straw experiment will be discussed and observed as we observe how the straw will keep a pompom down in the water instead of floating.

Earth Week- During this week, the children will learn and discuss what a plant needs to thrive. They will then have a chance to practice hands-on how to care for our plants outside and their own plants that they will grow. Activities during this week are sorting natural materials; sorting and discussion of what is considered compost, recycling, and trash; biodome collages; sensory earth day shaving cream painting. The older classroom will be making their own biodome collage. Our goal for the end of this month is for the children to know what features earth has and how we can take care of our planet!
