What's on in San Mateo this October

Weekly Themes: Farm, Pumpkins & Pinecones, Skeletons, Creepy Crawlies, and Halloween

It's spooky season! We welcome the month of October talking about barns and farms. Then, we start our spooky themes of skeletons and creepy crawlies. We end the month with our topic on Halloween. For our first theme, we will be talking about farms and barns. The teachers will go over what animals we can find in a barn. With this theme, they will have activities like animal counting (math) and barn animal letter sounds(language and literacy). Songs like "Ba-Ba Black Sheep", "Bingo", and a farm animal race are other activities during the week.

Tied along with the farm theme, pumpkins and pine cones will be introduced for the second week in October. The students will be paining with pine cones and making fizzy pine cones. Other classes will be exploring pumpkins in sensory and science activities. The children will guess what they think is inside a pumpkin then get to actually see and open up a pumpkin. The children will learn songs like '5 Little Pumpkins" and do some pumpkin smashing. Cooking projects are also a great hand-on experience. The children will make pumpkin bread within their classes.

The third week we will be exploring all of our bones in our bodies with Skeleton week. The 2yr olds will have cooking projects like Veggie Skeletons and skull/ Q-tip skeleton projects. The older classes will be having projects like Skeleton Building, Skeleton Portraits, labeling bones, and a toilet-paper roll skeleton man. During free play, we have the X-rays out on the light table for the children to explore.

Next, go underground to talk about creepy crawly bugs like spiders, snakes, and centipedes. Activities during this week include painting with creepy crawly bugs, making spider crafts, and trapping spiders in their webs. Cooking activities during this week include Ritz Spiders and Creepy Crawly Pretzel Snacks. The older group will have some STEAM activities like building a bridge for their creepy crawlies or writing their own story about "10 Little Monsters".

We will be celebrating trick-or-treating in our Halloween theme for the end of the month. We will incorporate language and literacy by reading books like Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. Science and sensory will go hand in hand with activities like Halloween sensory bins, mini pumpkin volcanoes, and eyeball exploration. We will work on math skills in activities like counting pine cones, pumpkins, and candy corn. We will be making our own goodie bags for our annual Halloween parade on Halloween day!
