What's on in San Mateo this January

Happy New Year! For the month of January, we will be exploring the following topics; birds, ice and snow, artic animals, and Chinese New Year. The letters of the month will be explored in activities like mask decorating (letter m), noodles sensory exploration and nest building (letter n), fresh squeezed orange juice (letter o), and polar bear craft (letter p). The first week of January, the children will review numbers 1-10 and letter Aa-Ll. For the second week, the kids will be learning about birds. Fine motor skills will be a focus in activities like feeding the baby bird and tracing/ cutting out a bird shape.

The theme of the third week is ice and snow. Since the children do not experience snow and ice outdoors, we will bring it indoors to them for exploration! Activities during this week include; snow sensory bins, ice volcanoes, ice and salt writing activities, and fizzy ice experiments. During the specified activities, the children will be asked open-ended questions. They will also be exploring the length of time for ice to melt. Sensory exploration will also be readily available with the ice and icy water on their hands.  experiments and observations will be made by mixing salt and observing the reaction it has on ice.

After experimenting with ice and snow, the children will be talking and learning about different artic animals who live in the chilly environments. The children will be sorting animals who are polar animals and those animals who are not. The children will be making and learning about penguins, learns about polar bears in crafts. Reading the book, Who Grows Up in the Snow by Theresa Longenecker will also let the children know about other polar animals. The older children will explore the food chain in a gross motor activity of the artic food chain.

In celebration of Chinese traditions, the children will be preparing a song and practicing for a fashion show. The children get to show off the colorful and vibrant traditional clothing of China. During the week, activities done will include making dragons, lanterns, and even tracing their names in Chinese calligraphy. They will also be exploring the different shades of red in a color mixing activity.
