How to Transition Your Infant to Daycare: A Stay and Play Guide

Written by Kids Konnect Preschools | May 13, 2026 9:22:34 AM

The decision to return to work and enroll your baby in an infant program is often a mix of emotions: excitement for their new adventure, a bit of guilt, and a lot of nerves. At Kids Konnect, we believe the first day should feel like a warm, supported step into a home-from-home.

We don’t just "watch" babies; we partner with families. Here is how we follow your lead to ensure the transition is as smooth for you as it is for your little one.

What is the best way to transition an infant to daycare?

We don’t expect you to drop your baby at the door and drive away on day one. Our "Stay and Play" approach invites you to hang out in the classroom.

This allows your baby to explore their new environment while using you as their secure base. It also gives you a chance to see our teachers in action - how they soothe a cry, engage in sensory play, and get to know each child individually.

Why Choose a Gradual Transition for Your Baby?

Traditional daycare "drop-offs" can be jarring. At Kids Konnect, our infant program is designed around the Continuity of Care model. We believe that a slow introduction can help your baby's brain to categorize the school as a "safe zone" rather than a place of abandonment.

The Benefits of a Staggered Schedule

  • Reduced Stress Cortisol: Slow transitions keep baby’s stress levels low.
  • Building Trust: Your infant learns that when you leave, you always return.
  • Teacher Bonding: It gives your Primary Care Teacher time to learn your baby's specific cues while you are still present to "translate."

However, we know life gets in the way. If you aren't able to follow this gentle transition, please don't worry, our staff will still be able to work closely with you to make sure they're meeting your baby's every need.

Ensuring Continuity of Care with Primary Teachers

Our Primary Care Teacher approach means one dedicated educator builds a relationship with your baby, getting to know their individual cues and personality and giving them consistency.

Expert Insight: With our Primary Care Teacher system, one dedicated educator takes the lead on your baby's key care routines - feeding, diapering, and naps. This means that updates provided to parents are detailed and personal.

Support for Nursing Mothers

Can I come in to nurse my baby during daycare? Yes. Nursing mothers are more than welcome to drop in. Maintaining your breastfeeding routine provides a sense of normalcy and comfort for your baby, helping the school feel like an extension of home.

How Does the "Stay and Play" Program Work?

Our "Stay and Play" philosophy means we follow your lead. You're never rushed out the door.

1. The Observation Phase

In the first few days, parents are invited to hang out in the infant classroom. You can sit on the floor, engage in sensory play, and watch how our staff interacts with other infants. You'll also witness first-hand our cleanliness and safety protocols.

2. Flexible Half-Day Trials

If you can, we recommend starting with half-days before transitioning to full-time care. This "easing in" period helps the infant adjust to the school’s ambient sounds and social environment without a full-on 8-hour day.

3. We're Able To Follow Your Lead

If your baby has a specific nap schedule or a unique way they like to be held while feeding, we don’t force them into a "school routine." We adapt to them.

We know that even after you leave, your mind is still in the classroom. Our staff provides constant updates and "handholding" for new parents. Whether it’s a photo during tummy time or a quick update on how much they ate, we keep you in the loop through our digital platform. You’ll never have to wonder how your baby is doing; you’ll see it in real-time.
